Translators and interpreters must not only have an excellent understanding of their given foreign languages, but must also be familiar with and understand the culture and history of the countries in question and have a strong feeling for the typical patterns and methods of communication.

An above-average mastery of the translator’s own mother tongue is also of crucial importance because, usually, one translates into this language. Above and beyond that, further detailed national or language-specific knowledge related to the given specialisation and a knowledge of the respective text types are essential.

Translators who aren’t doing a job for the first time aren’t going to make beginner’s errors at your expense. So ensure that your translator is sufficiently experienced.

Why many FRONT RUNNERs live in a country where their native language is spoken:
Those who live too long in the country of their B-language (foreign language) run the risk of forgetting their mother tongue. Such translators start making typical German errors. For example, in German one would say “in” the internet, while in English, the correct preposition is “on”. Therefore an American or British translator living in Berlin who writes "in the web“ is starting to make mistakes that a professional can’t afford to make.

Should translators work for you locally?
Today, the place in which a translator works is seldom important. Be it London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Berlin, Hamburg, Cape Town, Palma de Majorca - or any of the countless places in between - location is no longer relevant in an age of internet and DSL. Briefings and solutions can be sent in the blink of an eye by e-mail or fax and even setting up a video conference hardly requires more than an inexpensive webcam and a DSL connection.

Trust your good feeling. If you are the type of person who prefers personal communication even for small projects, you’re better off looking for a translator in your immediate vicinity. If, however, what you want is maximum quality combined with maximum success, you should also consider freelancers who aren’t just around the corner.
